Suratchai & Festka Spectre Prime Porcelain

Why did you choose Festka?

Because I’m a collector.

Experience & motivation

How did you get into cycling / what inspired you to start?

I began cycling when I was a child, but I stopped during my teenage years. However, when fixed-gear bikes started gaining popularity, I was captivated by their simplicity and elegant design. That inspired me to purchase one for fun, and that day marked the beginning of my journey back into the world of cycling.

Can you describe your first significant cycling experience?

On the first day I received my bike, I was eager to test it out. I quickly realized how fast it could go, so I decided to ride to a nearby shopping mall for a meal, a round trip of about 20 kilometers. The experience was exhilarating, as it dawned on me that a bicycle could take me far without the need for a car.

What motivates you to keep cycling regularly?

The more I cycled, the stronger and healthier I felt. Additionally, the wide variety of accessories available—like wheels, handlebars, pedals, and saddles — made customizing my bike an exciting hobby. I’ve always enjoyed shopping, so the process of enhancing my bike became even more enjoyable.

Bike & gear

Which Festka bike do you currently ride and why did you choose it?

I ride a Festka Spectre Prime Porcelain. This bike is truly a Real Custom creation because the designer tailored the frame to reflect my personal story, something that only I know. This frame is the most cherished piece in my collection, and I can't imagine any other frame surpassing it in my heart.

How important is the fit & design of the bike for you? E.g., did you get any customizations?

For me, comfort is paramount when it comes to modern bicycles because I’m not a professional racer. A bike that I can ride all day without discomfort is one that I’ll want to ride often. The more I ride it, the more I bond with it, and that connection naturally extends to the brand as well.

When shopping for a bike, what are the most important requirements?

The most important aspect for me is the story that the bike can convey. As a collector, every bike in my collection tells a unique tale. For instance, the Cervelo P5X is a beam bike that was reintroduced after 20 years, the Specialized Roubaix challenges conventional road bike design with a shock absorber on the head tube, and the Colnago Ottanta5 is the first Colnago bike to feature the founder’s signature as its logo.

This frame is the most cherished piece in my collection, and I can't imagine any other frame surpassing it in my heart.

Races & community rides

Describe your most memorable ride or cycling experience?

My most unforgettable cycling experience was riding from Vietnam back to Thailand. The journey involved crossing countries on rough roads, often surrounded by ten-wheeler trucks. It was a thrilling adventure, despite the dangers, and one that I will always cherish.

Have you cycled in any events or races? If so, which ones?

About five or six years ago, I participated in nearly every cycling event I could find, primarily in Thailand. Some of the events I joined include the Tour of Chiang Rai and the Master Tour Chiang Mai.

How do you prepare for a long ride or race?

When I was actively racing, I made sure to eat well and get plenty of rest. Nowadays, I don’t prepare as rigorously because I no longer ride at high speeds or compete. My focus now is simply on enjoying the ride and having a good time.

Can you share a story about a particularly tough ride or race? How did you overcome any challenges?

The most challenging ride I’ve ever undertaken was cycling from Vietnam back to Thailand on a bikepacking trip. We encountered numerous obstacles, especially on the route from Vietnam to the Laos border, a path that had never been cycled before. We had no idea where the rest stops were, where we would sleep, and some roads were so dangerous that we couldn’t ride them at all. At one point, we had to negotiate with truck drivers to transport us past these treacherous areas. We overcame these challenges by treating them as part of the adventure, and now we have stories to tell for a lifetime.

Lifestyle & community

What are the most important benefits of cycling?

Cycling offers numerous benefits—a healthier body, beautiful bikes that can double as home décor, endless opportunities for upgrades, and a means of travel from point A to point B. But most importantly, it’s the relationships you forge with people along the distance.

What advice would you give to someone that is just starting out cycling?

If you’re new to cycling, just walk into any bike shop, choose a bike you like, and start riding. You’ll discover your preferences as you go. The more you ride, the more you’ll learn about what kind of cycling you enjoy. Most importantly, don’t compare yourself to more experienced cyclists or worry about being slow or left behind. Everyone starts somewhere, and with time and consistency, you will get stronger.

Are you part of any cycling teams?

Yes, I’m a member of the Singha DTK Cycling Team, which is sponsored by Singha Beverages. Our activities focus on cycling and enjoying ourselves, especially with some drinks after a good ride.

Has cycling influenced other aspects of your life? If so, how?

Cycling allows me to focus on my surroundings, temporarily disconnecting from the outside world. It brings a sense of calm and makes life’s challenges seem more manageable. When I return to work, I do so with a clearer, more positive mindset.

Goals

Do you have any short or long-term cycling goals / any personal milestones?

I’ve never really set any specific goals. My plan is simply to keep cycling for as long as I can, enjoying every moment.

Is there any race or event you plan to participate in?

I’m interested in joining a gravel cycling event, but I haven’t found the perfect bike for it yet. I’m confident I’ll find one soon.
